Cloud Server local disks

A local disk is connected directly to the compute server via the PCIe interface using the NVMe protocol. Therefore, a local disk can only be created with a cloud server and used as a boot (system) disk.

Local disks have no network latency, making them suitable for tasks sensitive to read and write speeds.

You can track cloud server disk metrics using the Metrics service.

Disk subsystem configuration

The Servercore disk subsystem is configured in RAID 10 for storage reliability and performance. RAID 10 is an array where data is first mirrored (RAID 1) and then striped (RAID 0). RAID 10 is suitable for working with databases and other heavy operational workloads.

Advantages of RAID 10:

  • high performance achieved by simultaneously using multiple mirrored pairs and striping data between them;
  • fast array recovery when one disk fails — in such cases, only one mirrored pair is rebuilt;
  • storing data in two copies — as long as at least one disk in each mirrored pair is functioning, no data is lost;
  • provides fault tolerance at the RAID 1 level, but with higher performance due to data striping.

RAID 10 reduces the risk of data loss in case of disk failure, but it does not replace backups. Backups are necessary to protect data from various threats, including user errors, viruses, and multiple disk failures.

Local disk features

  • SSD NVMe disk.
  • Performance — 12800 IOPS read, 6400 IOPS write.
  • Throughput — 300 MB/s.
  • Recommended maximum disk size — 2 TB.
  • The disk subsystem is configured in RAID 10.
  • Can only be the cloud server boot disk; it is not used as an additional disk. Only network volumes can be connected as additional disks.
  • A cloud server can have only one local disk.
  • Cannot be disconnected from one cloud server and connected to another.
  • Cannot be resized directly; you can only change the cloud server configuration.
  • You cannot create another disk, snapshot, or backup from a local disk. You can create a disk image (for example, for quick server cloning).
  • Deleted along with all data when the cloud server is deleted.

Pricing

Local disks are billed according to the cloud platform payment model.

The cost of a local disk depends on its size and the pool segment in which the cloud server with this disk is created.

Every GB of local disk space is billed. The price per GB can be viewed at servercore.com.
