Public networks and subnets of a dedicated server

A public (Internet) network is a network for server access to the Internet using public IP addresses.

The server is automatically included in the shard VLAN for the public network, and it is allocated one IPv4 public address from the shared subnet.

Network parameters (IP address, subnet mask, default gateway) can be viewed in the Control panel: from the top menu, click ProductsDedicated ServersNetworkSubnet tab → subnet page.

To receive additional IP addresses, order a dedicated subnet and configure it. When ordering a dedicated subnet, IP addresses are allocated to an account in a separate VLAN. Only one dedicated VLAN for a public network is allocated per account in a single pool.

IP addresses from a dedicated subnet can be used on account servers located in the same pool (IP addresses only work within a single pool). When ordering a dedicated subnet, you can use either an address from a shared subnet or from a dedicated one. You cannot use both IP addresses simultaneously.

You can view the VLAN assigned to a port in the control panel: in the top menu, click ProductsDedicated ServersServers → server page → tab Ports.

The network interface on the server will be configured automatically only during OS auto-installation. When installing an OS from your own image, you must configure the network interface on the server manually.

When setting up the network, we recommend using Servercore recursive DNS servers, but you can specify any public DNS servers.

All traffic (incoming, outgoing) that passes through the Internet port is summarized and charged in accordance with the traffic consumption model.

Network limits are set on ports:

  • on the number of MAC addresses — 25 MAC addresses per switch port;
  • on broadcast traffic — 10 MB/sec per port for each individual traffic type.

Dedicated servers are by default under Servercore DDoS protection. You can connect a basic firewall for free for a public dedicated VLAN.

You can disconnect a custom configuration server from the public network; to do this, create a ticket. After disconnecting from the public network, it will no longer be possible to install the OS on the server via auto-installation.

Public shared IP addresses

Public shared IP addresses are located in a shared subnet and have a fixed /24 prefix (netmask 255.255.255.0). Other clients' servers are also in the shared subnet, and servers within a single account may be assigned to different shared subnets. For security, anti-IP-spoofing protection is used in the shared subnet.

A public shared IP address does not support:

  • connecting DDoS protection;
  • configuring static or dynamic routing;
  • unblock certain blocked ports and Internet resources;
  • configuring a BGP connection and BGP + anycast subnet;
  • simultaneously using a public dedicated IP address;
  • reassign the address to another server (including using VRRP, CARP, Keepalived, Corosync, etc. for server redundancy).

To change the IP address on your server, connect additional public IP addresses.

Public dedicated IP addresses

Public dedicated IP addresses are located in a dedicated subnet and have any prefix (netmask). IP addresses from a dedicated subnet can be used on account servers that are in the same pool. To receive a public dedicated IP address, add additional public IP addresses.

Connect additional public IP addresses

After ordering a dedicated subnet, you cannot use the public shared IPv4 address that was automatically allocated when the server was ordered.

  1. Order a dedicated subnet.
  2. Add the IP address to the accounting system.
  3. Change the network settings on the server.
  4. Switch the VLAN on the server port.

1. Order a dedicated subnet

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Dedicated Servers.
  2. Go to the Network section.
  3. Click Order public subnet.
  4. Select a subnet.
  5. Select the service the subnet will be used for.
  6. Select a region and pool where the subnet will be created. The subnet will be available to resources only in that pool. You cannot move a subnet to a different pool.
  7. Select a VLAN.
  8. Specify the purpose of use.
  9. Select a billing cycle.
  10. Click Pay. When the service is ready for use, you will receive a notification in the ticket.

2. Add the public IP address to the accounting system

In the accounting system, you can record which IP address is configured on your server. Note that the network settings on the server will not change; they must be updated manually.

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Dedicated Servers.
  2. In the Servers section, open the server page → tab Network.
  3. In the Public block, click Add IP address.
  4. Select a subnet.
  5. Select an IP address.
  6. Click .

3. Change the network settings on the server

When connecting an additional IP address in the server OS, change the network settings:

  • IP address;
  • subnet mask;
  • gateway.

Parameter values can be viewed in the control panel: in the top menu, click ProductsDedicated ServersNetwork → tab Public subnets → dedicated subnet card.

Apply the network settings. Server availability will be lost until the VLAN is changed on the port.

4. Switch the VLAN on the server port

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Dedicated Servers.
  2. In the Servers section, open the server page → tab Ports.
  3. In the Internet row in the VLAN column, click .
  4. In the VLAN field, select the ID of the dedicated VLAN in which you ordered a dedicated subnet in step 7.
  5. Click Configure. Server access will be restored with the new IPv4.

Return to the shared public IP address

  1. In the Control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select Dedicated Servers.
  2. In the Servers section, open the server page → tab Ports.
  3. In the Internet row in the VLAN column, click .
  4. In the VLAN field, select Shared.
  5. Click Configure.
  6. In the server OS, change the network interface parameter values for the public network. For details, see the instructions on configuring a network interface on a server. The parameter values for working with a public IP address from a shared subnet (/32) can be viewed in the control panel: in the top menu, click ProductsDedicated ServersNetworkSubnet tab → dedicated subnet card.
