S3: Quick start

You can work with S3 in the control panel and via the API.

  1. Create a bucket.
  2. Optional: configure bucket access.
  3. Optional: configure limits.
  4. Optional: choose a tool for working with the storage.
  5. Upload objects to the bucket.

1. Create a bucket

  1. Top up the balance.

  2. In the control panel, from the top menu, click Products and select S3.

  3. Go to the Buckets section.

  4. Click Create bucket.

  5. Enter a bucket name. For S3 API compatibility, the bucket name must meet the following conditions:

    • be unique among buckets of all users who use the storage via S3 API and are located in the same pool;
    • comply with the Amazon S3 bucket naming rules — contain only numbers, Latin letters, periods (.), and -; for more information, see the Bucket naming rules guide in the Amazon documentation.
  6. Select the region and pool where the bucket will be created.

  7. In the Configuration block:

    7.1. Select a bucket type:

    • private — for storing backups and other data with access via login and password or an authorization token;
    • public — for distributing content for a website or web application, accessible without authorization.

    7.2. Select a storage class:

    • standard storage — for storing and distributing frequently accessed data;
    • infrequent access storage — for storing rarely accessed data;
    • glacier storage — for storing very rarely accessed data. Available only in the ru-3 pool.

    The storage class only affects the cost of resources; technically, the performance of all classes is the same. Once a bucket is created, the storage class cannot be changed.

    7.3. Select the addressing type. We recommend choosing vHosted addressing for working with the S3 API. You cannot change the addressing type to Path-Style after the bucket is created.

  8. Optional: in the Data protection block:

    8.1. To store previous versions of objects, enable versioning.

    8.2. To protect objects from deletion, enable Object Lock. Enabling Object Lock does not lock objects automatically — you will be able to manage object locking after the bucket is created. Versioning is required for Object Lock — if you do not enable it, it will be enabled automatically.

  9. Click Create bucket.

2. Optional: configure bucket access

For more information about access management, see the Manage access in S3 guide.

  1. Add users with the required roles.
  2. Configure the access policy for the bucket.

3. Optional: set limits

You can set limits on the number of objects, the total size of objects, and specify the object storage duration; for more information, see the Bucket limits guide.

4. Optional: choose a tool for working with storage

For convenience and faster object upload speeds, configure tools — for example, the FTP protocol, Rclone client, AWS CLI, and others.

5. Upload objects

Use the Upload object guide.
